The Tacito Sideboard explores an often forgotten yet essential component of cabinetry – hinges. In this new collection from Milan-based designer Alessandro Stabile for Magis, an inset magnet system and unique felt doors allow this sometimes cumbersome movement to feel seamless. No need for a handle, there is a hidden beveled edge around each of the felt panels, a soft interface that makes it easy to grip at any height by a child or adult. Sleek, thoughtful, and elegant, the Tacito Sideboard brings attention to the mechanism of storage while retaining a refined edge.
After four years of Stabile developing prototypes, securing an invention patent, three injection molds, one extrusion die, one bending mold, four thermoforming molds, and two cutting dies, the Tacito collection comes to life in a variety of contrasting color palettes that are bound to fit any space or style.
The doors, acting similarly to sound dampening panels found in recording studios, work to reduce ambient sound from the pressed felt interior. A pop of color greets the user on the interior of the panel upon opening, refreshing and unexpected, like a dinner jacket with a bright lining.
Acoustic felt is pressed between two refined sheets of contrasting material, allowing the hardware to be housed elegantly and securely. Magnets inset into the frame provide extra strength, clipping in to the frame with ease.
This burgundy and light mint combination with the black aluminum legs cuts a stunning profile. The legs can be raised and lowered easily, and the signature system allows the material to work in its highest element, hinging silently and quickly on itself, a beautiful feature of felt.
This eggplant and orange combination is striking, the body’s purple slightly richer than the black tone of the legs, and a zing of orange in between.
We can see the elegance of the system below, a locking mechanism allowing the peg in the door panel to slot neatly into the frame. The overall thought is simple, yet the execution takes this to another level, imbuing an already modern sideboard with sophistication.
