What Your Christmas Décor Says About You ~ Fresh Design Blog

Did you know that two thirds of Brits decorate their home for Christmas, with a quarter of us putting up our tree as early as November? If you’re one of the many who deck the halls to get into the festive spirit, your choices might reveal more about you than you think! Interior Design Expert Melissa Denham from Hammonds fitted furniture explains what your festive aesthetic says about you, as we count down the days to Christmas.

The Minimalist

Your festive decorations don’t immediately catch the eye. They’re limited and understated, utterly congruous with your year-round scheme, delicately exuding themes of the season such as letting in light and nature renewing. Think fairy lights, a handful of ornaments and gold-sprayed pinecones and bare branches.

It’s likely you’re extremely organised, with Christmas presents bought and wrapped weeks ahead of schedule, and value tranquillity in your life, even during the busy festive season.

Glamorous

Christmas is the season to be showy and go glam with crystal accents, rich colours like wine and gold and shiny ornaments exuding scintillating sophistication.

If that’s you, it’s likely you have the elegance to match, and take pride in paying excellent attention to detail. Only the best will do for you and your guests!

Traditional

Do you prefer decorating with cards and a Christmas tree, and the classic colours of red and green with a smattering of sparkle? You favour a traditional finish that’s characterful, cosy – and probably slightly chaotic.

This sets the scene for what will likely be a sentimental period, where you welcome memories into your home and cherish time with the family and friends still with you.

Rustic

All is calm and bright with a rustic festive aesthetic. The wreath welcomes you as you walk through the door, and inside the banister and surfaces are lined with greenery embedded with pinecones and berries, bringing you close to the outdoors without the winter chill.

You’re probably cheerful and outdoorsy, a true embodiment of the spirit of Christmas while retaining your usual down-to-earth demeanour.

Scandi-Inspired

Pale woods, paper stars, neutral textiles and soft candlelight are characteristic of a Scandinavian festive look. Your home feels calm, intentional and quietly cosy, with decorations that prioritise atmosphere over excess.

This style often points to someone who values balance and wellbeing. You’re likely mindful about how your home feels, not just how it looks, and you see Christmas as a time to slow down, reset and enjoy the simple pleasures.

Handmade and Personal

If your tree is dotted with handmade decorations, children’s crafts, personalised baubles and souvenirs collected over the years, your Christmas décor tells a deeply personal story.

This usually belongs to someone sentimental and thoughtful, who values meaning over perfection. You care less about trends and more about memories, and your home becomes a living scrapbook during the festive season.

Playful and Colourful

Bold colours, novelty ornaments, quirky decorations and perhaps even a themed tree suggest a playful festive personality. This style of Christmas décor makes people smile the moment they step inside.

You’re probably fun-loving, expressive and not afraid to break a few “rules” when it comes to decorating. Christmas is about joy, laughter and shared moments for you, and your home reflects that energy

How to decorate your home for Christmas

Feeling inspired and wondering if there are other ways you could decorate your home for Christmas next year? Check out these ideas you might not have thought of that will enhance your dream scheme.

  • Winter greenery like a potted poinsettia and garlands add subtle seasonal charm and help make spaces feel happy and peaceful.
  • Seasonal scents can elevate your spaces in seconds and have the added benefit of masking any unwanted odours when guests are visiting. Think diffusers and candles with scents like citrus, fir, myrrh and warming cinnamon.
  • Cosy fabrics are a great way to make your home feel warmer in winter and are a sophisticated approach to decorating for the festive season.
  • Layered lighting can completely transform your space at Christmas. Table lamps, fairy lights and candles help soften rooms and create that warm glow everyone associates with festive evenings.
  • Don’t forget overlooked areas. Decorating staircases, hallway consoles, shelves and even bedroom spaces can make your whole home feel festive, not just the living room.
  • Edible décor is another simple touch. A bowl of clementines studded with cloves, a jar of cinnamon sticks or a festive cake stand on the kitchen counter adds charm while engaging the senses.

Conclusion

However you choose to decorate, your Christmas décor is less about rules and more about reflection. It reveals how you experience the season, what brings you comfort, and how you like to welcome others into your home. Whether your style is minimalist, traditional, glamorous or deeply personal, the most meaningful festive interiors are the ones that feel authentic to you.

At its heart, Christmas decorating is about creating a space that supports joy, connection and a sense of home during the darkest months of the year.
